Verizon Making Broadband a Reality in New Jersey in 2008 and
Beyond
Verizon reaffirmed its commitment Tuesday (March 11) to providing
consumers and businesses the best broadband networks available. The
pledge came at the New Jersey Connected Broadband Summit here. The
summit examined and showcased the state's broadband assets and
highlighted new and industry-moving applications that can benefit
the state's varied communities and residents.
"Over the past several years, Verizon and Verizon Wireless have
aggressively rolled out new land-based and wireless networks that
have changed the way New Jerseyans work and live," said Dennis Bone,
president of Verizon New Jersey. "Whether it's our award-winning
FiOS broadband network, our speedy High Speed Internet (DSL), our
industry-leading EVDO network from Verizon Wireless, or our
extensive long-haul networks from Verizon Business, we're
revolutionizing the way consumers and businesses communicate."
In addition to FiOS, High Speed Internet and EVDO, 100 percent of
schools in the Verizon footprint have access to the company's Access
New Jersey network. See

Heldrich Center dedicates Verizon Video Conference
Center
The John J. Heldrich
Center for Workforce Development and Verizon New Jersey
celebrated their decadelong partnership with the dedication of the
Verizon Videoconference Room at the Heldrich Center’s new home at 30
Livingston Avenue in New Brunswick.
Four wall-mounted flat screen TV monitors – two 50-inches wide and
two 42 inches – and a computer touch-screen control panel were the
most obvious signs of the $300,000 investment. Verizon has made
since 2004 in the partners’ shared mission to prepare New Jersey’s
youth as educated and skilled members of tomorrow’s workforce.
Videoconferencing is enabled through Verizon’s Access New Jersey
video network that connects more than 500 schools K-12, 45
universities, and content providers throughout the state and the
world to deliver cutting-edge career information.
The donation is an outgrowth of Career Connections, created by
influential business and education groups to educate students,
parents, teachers. and school counselors about career options;
convene statewide conferences to showcase successful
business/education/workforce development systems partnerships; and
promote use of online career information resources.
Two dozen guests, including John Heldrich, Verizon President Dennis
Bone, and Director of Public Affairs Ciro Scalera, who heads the
Career Connections project, joined Heldrich Center Director and
Professor Carl Van Horn and staff to dedicate the technology-rich
facility.
Heldrich staffers and Verizon engineers completed a three-way hookup
with Henry Hudson Regional High School in Highlands and the Winslow
Township school district prior to a video planning session for a
major educational videoconference this spring.

Around the World in 24 Hours
Access New Jersey provided staff and connections to Passaic Valley High School during a 24-hour videoconference with students from all over the globe.
The purpose of our project is to bring students from different cultures and backgrounds together to promote global awareness and understanding. We hope to do this through a combination of activities that utilize videoconferencing and an interactive website for the exchange of information and ideas. The culminating activity will involve Passaic Valley High School hosting a series of approximately one-hour individual videoconferences with participating schools during one 24-hour period.
Students were engaged in discussion on selected topics and problem-solving. The project has two basic elements: the actual videoconferences themselves and an interactive website to promote the exchange of information and ideas. The advances in communication technology offers this generation valuable and fruitful multicultural dialogues. Videoconferencing allows people separated by distance to verbally and visually communicate in real time. Interactive websites allow for the continuation of dialogue long after the videoconferences are over. It is our wish here at Passaic Valley High School that this type of hands-on learning prepares our students to be intelligently engaged in diagnostic analysis and lively discussion with their peers from around the world. We also want this project to serve as a basis for our students to understand their relationships and responsibilities to people, institutions and the environment.

Verizon Access New Jersey Provides Videoconferencing Network to
Assist New Jersey Division of Youth and Family Services With
Educational and Training Programs for Caseworkers
Access to Broadband Network Will Help Improve Delivery of Services
to Children and Families.
Under its Access New Jersey program, Verizon has committed $2
million in free equipment and special rates for high-speed
telecommunications services to build a videoconferencing network and
to provide technical support and access to Verizon's ANJ Video
Portal. The facilities will help DYFS provide training to
caseworkers in skills such as case management, while also offering
community programs to assist children and families.
At a news conference today, New Jersey Human Services Commissioner
James M. Davy and Verizon New Jersey President Dennis M. Bone
demonstrated the videoconferencing network, which already links DYFS
offices in Trenton , Camden and Randolph . The facilities enable
caseworkers in multiple locations to participate in point-to-point
as well as multipoint interactive conferences.
“We're proud that DYFS is using Verizon's broadband technologies and
fiber-optic network to better serve New Jersey 's children and their
families,” said Bone. “This partnership underscores our commitment
to a better quality of life for all New Jerseyans, especially those
who are most in need.”
The first phase of the project has been completed. Approximately 25
DYFS field offices are now fully integrated. In the second phase,
over the next 6 months, Verizon will expand the network by
installing videoconferencing units at 20 additional field offices.
“Thanks to this partnership with Verizon, we can improve training
and support for our dedicated staff,” said Davy. “By working
together, we can protect New Jersey 's children.”
Traditionally, Verizon's ANJ network provides schools and libraries
in New Jersey with free network equipment, reduced-priced services
and access to the ANJ video portal, a managed video network that
creates an interactive distance-learning community.
To date, Verizon has committed more than $150 million in equipment
and services through ANJ and has connected nearly 2,500 New Jersey
schools and public libraries in its service area to its
telecommunications network. See full press release at the NJ
Department of Human Services

Verizon ANJ Team Honored by New Jersey Army National Guard.
Broadband Technology Facilitates Video-Teleconferences Brings
Families Together for the Holidays
NEWARK, N.J. - Troops of the 2nd Battalion (M), 113 Infantry, New
Jersey Army National Guard, recently returned from a year of duty at
Guantnamo Bay (GITMO), Cuba, said "thanks" to Verizon and the Newark
Museum for making it possible to see and speak with their loved ones
last November and December.
The recognition is part of the Army National Guards Freedom Salute
Campaign, a program that accords special honors to individuals and
organizations for their support of the soldiers and their families.
Verizon received the Center of Influence award.
The Newark Museum hosted three video-teleconferences (VTC) and
Verizon provided the broadband technology and support in a partnership
during the 2005 Holiday season called Project Heart to Heart.
During the VTC events, soldiers had the opportunity to see and speak
with their children, wives, girlfriends, parents and friends for the
first time in more than six months.
More than 100 soldiers and their loved ones attended ceremonies in
their honor at the Newark Armory on August 7th. The soldiers, who were
mobilized for a year of duty, received a U.S. flag, a commemorative
coin, a lapel insignia and a Defender of Freedom certificate. Their
spouses and children also received mementos.
Verizon's Mark Bocchieri, Eric Kulmala, Stephen Antonucci and Dan
Cleary accepted a framed print of the American Flag at the event on
behalf of Verizon. Along with others at Verizon, they contributed their
time, effort and technical skills to the Project Heart to Heart program.

Verizon Commits $1.75 Million to Help Provide Upgraded Broadband
Network for New Jersey’s Statewide Hub Libraries System
NEWARK, N.J. – The New Jersey State Library will have a new
broadband network that will improve high-speed Internet access for the
more than 300 libraries in the state’s Hub Libraries system and provide
other features as well, thanks to a $1.75 million grant from Verizon.
The new network is expected to be in place by the first quarter of 2006.
The grant is being provided through Verizon’s Access New Jersey program.
“Helping the people of New Jersey stay connected is what Verizon New
Jersey is all about, and Verizon’s Access New Jersey Program is a great
example of making those vital connections possible,” said Dennis Bone,
Verizon New Jersey president. “Through Access New Jersey, Verizon has
committed more than $150 million to bring high-speed communications
technology for voice, data and video to over 2,500 classrooms and
libraries all over the state.”
"This commitment from Verizon positions us strategically to take
advantage of current opportunities and emerging technologies,” noted
Norma Blake, State Librarian." Our goal is to foster the highest quality
and most cost-effective Internet access for New Jersey libraries.
Through this agreement with Verizon, we will be able to reach our goal.”
The new infrastructure design will feature a fully redundant and
scalable network, including two service centers from which technology
services such as e-mail, Web site hosting and technical support will be
delivered by a team that will be on call 24 hours per day, 7 days per
week. Two separate Internet service providers (ISPs) will serve the new
network, so that if one has problems on its network, traffic will
automatically be routed to the other.
About the New Jersey State Library

service to the executive, legislative and judicial branches of state
government for more than 200 years. The State Library’s mission has
expanded since its establishment in 1796 to lead in the provision,
